First Recording of Isospora spp. in dogs and cats in Basra Governorate

Isospora spp are protozoa coccidian parasite from phylum Apicomplexa found in small intestine in host (dogs and cats).
The aim of this study was to diagnosis the parasite Isospora.spp infection microscopically in dogs and cats (stray and housing).used flotation methods by sheither solution.
In the current study , A total of (130) fecal samples of dogs and cats( different in sex and ages). this animals samples examined to (109 )cats ,( 21)dogs , were taken from different areas of basrah city during during the period from20/ September 2023 till 15 April 2024.
A total of infection with parasite Isospora.spp was (13) which divided in to (2) dogs and (11) in cats , total precent was (10%).
The results depended on the shape , structure and diameters of isolated oocysts under light microscopic which found oocyst of Isospora .spp in dogs was distinguished by its large size and measurement for oocyst(34–40 by 28–32) and sporyolated (18–21 by 15–18).
Samples were collection from different area of basrah province ,a high infection with Isospora.spp observed in al-fayhaa area (13.3%) .A high of infection rate with Isospora spp according to months study showed the high rate in Feberuary (23.8%) and low of infection rate in September and October(zero).
A high rate of Isospora.spp infection in rural area of basrah province (13.3%).
A cording to symptoms observed precent dogs infection with isospora.spp without symptoms( 50%)while the distinctive signs (diarrhea 28% and dehydration 28%) also in cats the sever diarrhea and vomiting was high precent (30%).
